As many of you know, I now live in Louisville, Kentucky and am married to a beautiful wife who grew up in Louisville as a huge Cards Fan. So, with that I am a Louisville fan by marriage.
This year it was extremely easy to root for this team from Louisville. They all seemed to be likeable guys, and I truly do believe that not only did they see themselves as a team, but as brothers from different mothers. So, last night when they were cutting down the nets, I was happy for the team, and I was happy for my wife, and our friends and co-workers who are die hard Louisville fans. It was incredible to see the city come alive, and it was fun to watch my wife be so excited for a team she grew up with.
Funny thing though, as the clock was winding down, my wife looked at me and said “I am going to need you to be a bit more excited.” I just looked at her and smiled. I just couldn’t do it. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy for the team and especially my wife, and I have always been a big fan of Pitino as a basketball coach, but they weren’t MY team.
That got me thinking even more….why could I not be more excited for this team? I live in the city, I am married to a Louisville fan, many of our friends and co-workers either went to or are fans of Louisville, yet I just couldn’t do it. Honestly, it just made me a bit more disappointed that the team that was cutting down the nets last night wasn’t Xavier. So the question is why??
Well, because to me, Xavier basketball isn’t just a sport. It is an institution to me. You know those people who say that sports is just a game? Well in some cases, that may be correct, but to me, Xavier basketball isn’t just a game. Xavier basketball to me takes me back to all the times I spent with my buddies during those four years…the parties, the senior year when we drove down to Atlanta for the Elite Game at Duke etc…Xavier basketball is the tie that binds all of us who are seaprated all over the country from Cincinnati, to Cleveland to Louisville, to Chicago, DC and Pittsburgh. That is why I live and breathe Xavier basketball with every dribble, every shot and every rebound, and why I can’t wait until the opening tip next year.
